makeup review: l’oréal infallible pro-matte liquid foundation

makeup review: l’oréal infallible pro-matte liquid foundation

It’s all about matte.

Eyeshadow? Matte. Bronzer? Matte. Lipstick? Matte. Nails? Matte. So of course, foundation is added to that list.

I’m on a budget. I cannot afford to constantly be buying a $30 bottle of foundation. When I heard good things from beauty vloggers such as MannyMUA and Jeffree Star about this foundation- and a drugstore foundation at that- I was convinced this was the one. It’s not that inexpensive, but it’s not $30 either. I picked it up at CVS for $12.99.

Finding the right shade at a drugstore is never an easy thing. I ended up buying a shade too dark for me, but eventually tanned into it. If you are interested in this product, I recommend buying a shade lighter than you actually are when comparing your neck to the shade on the bottle. The packaging makes the liquid appear lighter, but once applied is a slightly darker shade. (Or you can use it as motivation to get a tan, whatever works for you.)

Application is key.

The actual product itself is reflective of what you pay for. I use a damp Beauty Blender to apply, and this works better than a brush with this product. It lasts all day when set with my Laura Mercier translucent powder, and concealers and powders sit nicely ontop of it. If you do not blend or set this foundation properly, you will have harsh orange streaks.

It’s not this miracle product I expected big names to buy. My face is not instantly flawless, the foundation just delivers matte skin when applied evenly and expertly. You have to make an effort with this product.

Always buy for your skin type.

In my Oatifix review, I mentioned I had combination skin, so I’m both oily and dry. Matte products in general emphasize dry patches. I always lather on moisturizer in the morning and use a hydrating primer from Neutrogena (review to come!), so on my good skin days, this foundation gets the job done. My skin is even, oil is controlled, and problem areas are concealed.

But when it is bad, it is bad. At the end of the day, my forehead feels dry and flaky, and it appears like I’m using a self-tanner from the dollar store. While this could be reflective of my skin type, there are still some good skin days where this product just doesn’t do it for me. I’m pretty consistent in my application, and honestly the product worked worse when I first purchased it. As I near the end of the foundation’s shelf life, it’s been working better more times than not. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

The search continues.

I don’t think I will be buying this foundation again. To me, the cons outweigh the pros. I’ve heard good things about Maybelline Matte + Poreless that I plan to pick up soon.
